Course overview

This course deepens the critical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and advanced analytical techniques of economics and applies these to important contemporary economic questions. It will draw on knowledge and skills from earlier courses in economics to synthesise how theoretical and empirical analysis are used together to make informed economic judgements and recommendations. A key feature of the course is a supported research project.

Course learning outcomes

  • Provide a balanced and coherent discussion of conceptual, methodological and ethical issues underlying the identification, selection, implementation and evaluation of a variety of economic problems
  • Explain how to use economic data to discern across competing economic mechanisms within available economic theories
  • Explain how economic theory can be used to interpret available economic data
  • Use advanced economic methods to apply what has been learned in the breadth of their economic studies to build and present a research project
