Course overview
This course aims to provide students with an overview of radiation safety across several sectors. Students will experience radiation safety firstly in medicine, industry and research, before delving deeper into the safety aspects across mining and the processing of raw radioactive materials. Through examining the procedures and activities that apply safety across various sectors, this course aligns with the programs intent to provide real world, practical knowledge for the effective management of radiation and radioactive materials.
Course learning outcomes
- Explain the radiation safety practices across the medical, industrial, agricultural and research sectors
- Describe the radiation safety practices across the nuclear sector and compare the differences and similarities between the power and defence sectors
- Explain the radiation safety practices across the mining, milling, and refining sectors
- Prepare a radiation safety management plan based on a specific scenario highlighting radiation safety and management principles and procedures
- Translate the safe management of radiation, radioactive materials, and radioactive sources, across a broad audience spectrum including scientific, industrial, and members of the public
