Course overview

This course will explore the concept of plate tectonics and develop knowledge of the Earth as a four-dimensional dynamic system.

Course learning outcomes

  • Recognise models for the lithosphere and asthenosphere including their physical properties
  • Describe the main forces that impact the Earth's (sub)surface, their drivers and how the Earth responds
  • Apply knowledge of plate forces and lithospheric properties to interpret tectonic processes that operate at plate boundaries and/or within plate interiors
  • Demonstrate proficiency in common practical skills in tectonics and structural geology
  • Investigate a tectonic system in the field via data collection and interpretation as part of a group
  • Assimilate appropriate structural, metamorphic, geophysical, geochemical evidence to interrogate tectonics operating in the past
