Course overview

The aim of this course is to further develop the student's knowledge and understanding of the physics and principles of operation of equipment used in Medical Imaging, Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy. Magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]; Nuclear medicine; Quality assurance in nuclear medicine; Mammography; Radiotherapy [Conformal]; Radiotherapy [Electron and heavy ion]; Treatment planning; Brachytherapy; Unsealed source therapy; Quality assurance in radiotherapy; Radiation protection [Radiotherapy and nuclear medicine].

Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse the physical principles and equipment used in advanced imaging modalities, including Mammography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI),
  • Explain the physical principles and equipment used in advanced Nuclear Medicine imaging using Positron Emission Tomography (PET),
  • Summarise the physical principles and equipment used in advanced Radiation Therapy techniques, including conformal, electron and heavy ion therapy.
  • Describe the physical principles and equipment used in Brachytherapy and Unsealed Source therapy, including quality assurance.
  • Recognise the principles of Radiation Protection in Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine.
