Course overview

This course will develop students' ability to consolidate and integrate a broad range of skills, knowledge and design methodologies to create design solutions for mass production in response to complex contexts and situations. Students will consolidate knowledge in branding, design for high volume manufacturing, design for sustainability, project management and the specification and integration of simple electrical technical packages. Students will integrate skills and knowledge from the previous courses in the program to take on complex design projects from conception and briefing, through design development to implementation and technical communication. They will apply knowledge of the ecological and social impacts of mass manufacturing and develop skills in using product sustainability evaluation tools. In addition students will apply high levels of expertise to integrate a broad range of skills including design simulation, development and communication via text, oral presentations, three-dimensional model making, CAD, drawing and graphic presentations.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply knowledge of high volume manufacturing methods and processes to inform the concept and detail design of products for mass production.
  • Utilise computer aided design tools to develop, analyse and communicate product designs.
  • Develop a design for a particular brand, technology and user context.
  • Demonstrate and utilise knowledge of design for sustainability principles for the development of products.
  • Utilise a range of communication technologies and techniques including engineering drawings to describe the technical, aesthetic and practical elements of a design proposal.
  • Propose and specify technical elements of a simple mechanical or electrical product.
  • Identify and interpret standards for product design.
