Course overview

To enable students to simulate all forms of cloth and garments in industry-standard visual effects software and systems.

This immersive industry-based course, delivered on-site at Rising Sun Pictures, will build upon students’ existing visual effects knowledge, and familiarises students with professional practice in the visual effects industry, providing the theory, skills, and techniques to produce industry-standard creature effects simulations. Throughout the course, students will learn the techniques required to create realistic cloth simulations for animated characters and environments. The course covers a range of topics, including cloth dynamics, constraints, and collision detection, which will enable students to achieve realistic movement and interaction with the environment. Furthermore, students will learn how to use industry-standard cloth simulation tools to apply physical properties to the cloth, such as weight, density, and flexibility. By the end of the course, students will have the skills and knowledge required to produce industry-standard cloth simulations suitable for film, television, video games, and other media.

  • Introduction to RSP Creature Effects pipeline
  • Cloth dynamics
  • Simulation processes and dependencies
  • Skin dynamics

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically analyse and implement industry-standard creature effects production practices
  • Apply key tools and techniques within industry standard software to generate professional quality, photorealistic cloth simulations
  • Demonstrate autonomy and adaptability in planning and managing a program of work to meet a production brief and its deadline through iterative project submission and review
  • Demonstrate direction within a simulated team environment and produce work that meets industry-standard quality assurance and review processes
