Course overview

This course introduces learners to data as an asset and data lifecycle (creation, collection, processing, storage/archiving, use, disposal). Explains structured, semi-structured and unstructured data and approaches to their storage and manipulation in context of IT/IS in business and professions. This course introduces students to concepts of data provenance, data semantics (data dictionaries, ontologies) and data quality.

Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse data and metadata life cycle in the business and professions context
  • Analyse data semantics and construct a Data Dictionary
  • Evaluate data quality including Accuracy, Completeness, Consistency, Uniqueness, Timeliness, and Validity
  • Describe optimal data storage in a given business context
  • Query structured and semi-structured databases
