Course overview

Game Design introduces students to the fundamentals of game design and development. It explores the evaluation and critiquing of design approaches prompting the design of innovative game design techniques. Students will integrate design approaches while collaborating within a diverse team to develop industry standard games.

Course learning outcomes

  • Work effectively within a diverse team to develop a professionally designed, innovative game.
  • Apply a range of game design approaches, including principles from the psychology of games to create engaging player experiences of varying audiences.
  • Evaluate a range of games and design approaches including those of successful and unsuccessful games.
  • Present an effective structured pitch to an audience with diverse game design experiences, displaying domain knowledge in the genre of game chosen.
  • Describe the ethics and impact of games from indie through to AAA titles to promote responsible game development practices.
  • Analyse the market demand for a potential game and establish the key parameters for developing a successful game tailored to market needs
