Course overview

Modern engineering tools and processes are developed using programming tools, including powerful frameworks for analysing and visualising data. This course will provide students with practical skills in the use of programming tools to execute engineering calculations, analyse data, and visualise results. The course will cover the use of both spreadsheet and code approaches, concluding with an open-ended project. The foundational skills taught in this course will be extended in future engineering modelling courses.

Course learning outcomes

  • Use spreadsheet and programming tools to read, process, visualise, and write data
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the professional and structured use of both spreadsheet and programming environments
  • Implement iterative and recursive algorithms and demonstrate understanding of efficiency and accuracy
  • Create dataset visualisations which are accessible and follow best practices in data presentation
  • Demonstrate knowledge of common programming principles and practices
  • Undertake self-guided analysis of an open source dataset, including documentation of methods and code used
