Course overview

This introductory course will teach students imperative style programming using their first programming language. They will develop programming skills and core programming techniques including problem solving approaches, variables, control statements, repetition, and functions. They will be able to solve simple procedural problems using the skills they will learn in this course.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply problem solving strategies to solve problems and express the solution as an algorithm and then a coded solution
  • Implement programs to solve problems and choose appropriate conditional and iteration constructs for a given programming task
  • Apply functions to solve a given programming task
  • Describe the behaviour of computer software at the programming level
  • Test and debug algorithms and programs and describe strategies that are useful in debugging
  • Apply good programming practices, specifically, coding style standards and source code documentation
