Course overview
The aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of Aboriginal Nation building and governance as a significant factor for Aboriginal communities to achieve their economic and community development aspirations. Students will engage with nation building theorists and practitioners to explore Indigenous nation building as a governance and community planning tool for Aboriginal and The aim of this course is Torres Strait Islander communities. This course will introduce students to the key elements of nation building. Students will critically analyse, consolidate and synthesise information relating to Aboriginal nation building, identify the need for nation building and demonstrate specialised knowledge and understanding of the importance of nation building and be able to apply this knowledge in their professional practice. This course privileges voices of Indigenous peoples nationally and internationally as it considers the research foundation of the Indigenous nation building approach and its challenges.
Course learning outcomes
- Identify the elements of colonization that have impacted on Aboriginal knowledge, languages, cultures and the implications for rebuilding Aboriginal Nations in a contemporary context
- Think critically about nation building and governance and be able to generate strategies to achieve nation building
- Critically analyse Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and North American research on Indigenous Nation building principles and what successful nation building looks like in different Indigenous communities
