Course overview

The aim of this course is to enable students to apply communication theory and literature on key issues to organisational practices. Organisational communication theories as they relate to understanding and working with diverse others; interpersonal and team communication; intercultural and intergenerational communication; workplace practices; feedback in the workplace, oral and visual communication; online communication and social media; negotiation; managing conflict; persuasion and power.

Course learning outcomes

  • Discuss strategies for the effective management of organisational communication
  • Explore the implications of diversity in the context of communication theory and practice with particular emphasis upon inter-cultural and international contexts
  • Analyse and apply negotiation strategies, including conflict resolution
  • Apply communication knowledge to common practical contexts in organisations
  • Demonstrate Business Enterprise Skills in the context of the Management discipline: i) Problem Solving (intermediate level); ii) Written Communication (intermediate level); and iii) Oral Communication (intermediate level).
