Course overview

This course will further extend students' capability in spoken and written communication in Academic and Professional use of English, at a developed level. In this course, students will further develop their academic and professional use of English. This is particularly for students who wish either to specialise in English for academic, educational or professional purposes. Students will extend their expertise in critical reading, writing and analysis; and other dimensions of research and writing in English. Students will develop an understanding of how to use intercultural strategies and appropriate genres of writing and presentation skills required in their intended worlds of work.

Course learning outcomes

  • use ability to communicate through English in formal and informal contexts, including problem-solving situations
  • develop and apply the skills to listen to, read, view and respond to English texts used in professional contexts
  • use a range of resources to gather, process, synthesise and evaluate information
  • apply skills in oral and written critical analysis and evaluation
  • develop and apply knowledge and use of the corpus of English (ie complex terminology and grammatical structures)
  • examine and evaluate intercultural communicative skills in English
