Course overview

This course will develop students' understanding of social media as a professional communication channel, and their ability to critically analyse the relationship between social media presence, personal brand, and reputation. The course will also develop students' awareness of social media as a professional communication strategy used by both individuals and organisations. Students will be introduced to the concept of social media as a communication channel that traverses their professional and private lives. The aim of this course is topics include social media usage in society, the impact of social media on interpersonal communication, social media privacy and ethics, social media reputation, analytics and metrics, social media platforms, and social media and celebrity. Students will also examine personal and industry case studies, and the use of social media as an organisational communication strategy.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the extent and prevalence of social media usage at a personal and societal level
  • Discuss the evolution of digital communication, specifically social media, and the impact of a networked society on interpersonal communication
  • Summarise the main social media platforms currently on offer, their demographics and applications
  • Explain the relationship between social media presence and professional reputation
  • Demonstrate skills in creating social media content for professional purposes.
