Course overview

In this course, students will develop technical laboratory skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, in addition to evaluative skills, in both theory-focussed workshops and practical based laboratory activities, with the aim of further developing an understanding of advanced synthetic methods in organic chemistry.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply knowledge of advanced synthetic methods to conceptual problems in organic synthesis, and to evaluate proposed solutions
  • Representing chemical structures, formulae, equations and reaction mechanisms
  • Demonstrate proficiency in undertaking individual and/or team-based preparative laboratory investigations using appropriate apparatus, techniques and safe laboratory practices
  • Analyse, interpret and present the results of preparative laboratory experiments
  • Communicate results of laboratory experiment in written scientific reports and/or oral presentations
