Course overview
This course aims to investigate in detail the structure, function and reactivity of compounds and extend to advanced principles and strategies used in drug modification and synthesis. Condensation reactions in the synthesis of compounds. Amine, imine and enamine chemistry. Advanced theory of aromaticity. Synthesis and chemical modification of selected compounds containing aromatic rings. The structure and reactivity of heterocyclic compounds as they relate to physiologically active compounds. Retrosynthetic design.
Course learning outcomes
- Evaluate the structures of selected drug classes and apply to the interpretation of their chemical reactivity and biological activity
- Apply molecular reaction theory for the interpretation and retrosynthetic design of the synthesis of selected drugs and related compounds
- Evaluate, design and apply procedures applicable to the synthesis and chemical modification of drugs and related compounds
- Apply spectroscopic techniques for the confirmation of the structure of selected drugs and related compounds
