Course overview

This course aims to investigate the structure, function and reactivity of compounds and introduce the theory of molecular structure modification as applied to drug synthesis. Factors that influence the acid/base activity of drugs. Reactions and mechanisms applied to the synthesis and modification of drugs and related compounds. Stereochemistry and its effect on drug activity.

Course learning outcomes

  • Relate the structure of selected drugs to their function and chemical reactivity.
  • Appreciate the structural (stereochemical) features of selected drugs.
  • Develop a range of basic laboratory skills applicable to the synthesis and chemical modification of selected drugs and related compounds.
  • Apply elementary spectroscopic techniques to the determination of the structure of selected drugs and related compounds
