Course overview

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the basic theoretical and practical concepts of physical, and general chemistry. Stoichiometric calculations; quantities of reactants and products; classes of chemical reactions Thermochemistry. Atomic structure and periodicity, chemical bonding and molecular structure. Intermolecular forces, properties of solid, liquid and gaseous states; properties of solutions. Reaction kinetics, and equilibria. Introductory acid-base theory; colligative properties. Transition Elements.

Course learning outcomes

  • Calculate and interpret chemical data
  • Describe fundamental aspects of bonding and molecular structure
  • Recognise factors which influence the control of a chemical reaction including thermodynamics, kinetics and equilibrium
  • Use equipment in chemistry laboratories to carry out general chemistry practical procedures
