Course overview

Family Business Fundamentals is an invaluable course for enhancing students' understanding of the characteristics, contributions, and complex issues unique to family businesses and developing their critical analytical and problem-solving skills to excel in leading and/or advising family businesses. Using real-life family business cases, this course provides students with a foundational understanding of the relevant theories (systems theory, agency and stewardship theory, the resource-based view, and the socio-emotional wealth perspective), frameworks, and tools to critically analyse and recommend strategies to improve family dynamics, strategic and succession planning, entrepreneurial venturing, and the performance of family businesses.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically evaluate the relevant theories, frameworks, and tools useful for understanding the behaviour and performance of family firms
  • Apply relevant theories, frameworks, and analytical tools to critically analyse and develop solutions to complex family business issues stemming from the intersection of family, business and ownership systems
  • Develop strategies for fostering sustainable growth, entrepreneurship, and innovation within the complexity of the broader family enterprise context
  • Apply the interpersonal skills and processes required to work effectively in a team environment
  • Communicate recommendations to an audience persuasively and succinctly
