Course overview

Family enterprises—including family-owned businesses as well as broader wealth, governance, and entrepreneurial activities—are central to economies worldwide. This course provides an advanced understanding of their distinctiveness, equipping students to critically evaluate complex issues and strategies for their long-term continuity.

Drawing on real-world case studies, students will integrate and apply relevant theories and frameworks to examine governance, succession, innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability across both business and non-business family assets. Emphasis is placed on developing and evaluating strategies that foster leadership and transgenerational success. The course also builds interpersonal and communication skills for influencing diverse audiences as leaders or advisors.

Course learning outcomes

  • Evaluate and synthesise the relevant theories and frameworks to explain the uniqueness of family enterprises.
  • Integrate and critically apply relevant theories and frameworks to evaluate complex family enterprise issues.
  • Develop and critically evaluate strategies for fostering leadership, entrepreneurship, and sustainability within the broader family enterprise context.
  • Apply the interpersonal skills and processes required to influence and enhance effectiveness in team environments.
