Course overview
This course will develop knowledge of contemporary concepts and challenges surrounding global security, geopolitics, and defence co-operation. Students will examine key questions and complexities of modern global political dynamics, critically evaluating challenges and developing an understanding of changing political cultures and their complex interconnections with/implications for global security and defence co-operation efforts. Global Security: Understanding of global geopolitical trends; impacts of shifts in global power dynamics; cultural political differences; international political economy; managing geopolitical risk in defence, space and related industries; ethical challenges in global security management; global security in space.
Global Dynamics: Understanding emerging power and negative synergy between great power competition and transnational threats; long-term strategic consequences of changes in international order; Strategies for fostering cooperation; Interplay between economic trade and global power dynamics.
Course learning outcomes
- Identify and critically analyse contemporary global security issues and their impact on defence, space, and related industries.
- Critically evaluate impact of changing geopolitical trends on defence co-operation and related industries.
- Critically analyse political & ethical challenges in the context of defence, space, and related industries.
- Develop skills to analyse threats and opportunities shaping global security.
- Develop defence/space specific skills for understanding and analysing a host of issues, including the global military balance, asymmetric warfare, and regional conflicts.
