Course overview

In this course, students will analyse the Australian Standards and National Construction Code requirements for the design and construction of Class 1 and 10 buildings. Students will demonstrate an understanding of building surveying scientific principles used in the design and operation of Class 1 and 10 developments. The (National Construction Code) Building Code of Australia Volume 2 and associated Australian Standards. Design and assessment of residential buildings. Requirements for structural adequacy, specifically timber-framed construction. Fire safety, energy efficiency, health and amenity requirements for residential buildings. Bushfire mitigation measures for design and construction of residential buildings. Deemed-to-satisfy assessment and performance consideration of design and engineering solutions of buildings and structures.

Course learning outcomes

  • Evaluate the design and construction of residential buildings in accordance with the National Construction Code and related Australian Standards and explain the concept of the performance based National Construction Code.
  • Create and use sketch plans, elevations, sections and specifications to communicate construction elements.
