Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide students with broad knowledge and understanding of the workings of the (international) construction industry, and how the role of a Building Surveyor fits into this. The students on this course will typically gain knowledge and understanding in the following subjects: the supporting and enclosing of domestic and commercial buildings; operations of building surveying companies; building elements and their sequencing; elementary building services; building regulation and codes; roles and organisation of the industry's professions and business entities; the roles of authorities, regulatory and advisory bodies; introduction to building estimating, tendering and project procurement.

Course learning outcomes

  • To review and consolidate the process of domestic and commercial (international) construction
  • To review the organisation of the construction industry and management and teamworking techniques of the construction process
  • To plan and implement the commercial practices involved in construction cost estimating and tendering within the building industry
  • To analyse the Acts, Regulation, Codes and Standards pertaining to the construction industry
  • To communicate effectively in oral, written and graphical formats incorporating relevant information
