Course overview
This course aims to build a good understanding of common materials such as concrete, steel, and timber, as well as building structures. This course provides foundational knowledge for study of construction in other contexts such as economic and environmental considerations in construction management at the postgraduate level.
- Construction Materials
- Structural Concepts
- Soil Mechanics
Course learning outcomes
- Select appropriate construction materials based on their characteristics and properties such as structural, fire, durability.
- Identify the sustainable properties and environmental impacts of a range of construction materials.
- Apply the knowledge of soil mechanics to the design of cuts and footings using Australian Standards and Codes.
- Demonstrate an understanding of structural behaviour under loads and its application in structural design using Australian Standards and Codes.
- Apply the knowledge of soil mechanics and structural principles to the design of a simple structure using Australian Standards and Codes.
