Course overview

This course aims to build a good understanding of common materials such as concrete, steel, and timber, as well as building structures. This course provides foundational knowledge for study of construction in other contexts such as economic and environmental considerations in construction management at the postgraduate level.

Course learning outcomes

  • Select appropriate materials for their structural, fire, sustainability, durability and other characteristics using a knowledge of the characteristics of timber, masonry, steel and concrete
  • Identify loads and use engineering principles to select appropriate materials in a structural system using Australian Standards and design and communicate through drawings and specifications, a simple structure
  • Apply knowledge of soil mechanics to create and communicate through drawings and specifications, a simple footing design using Australian Standards
  • Apply knowledge of soil mechanics to the design of cuts or excavations
