Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to integrate the learning that they have gained in the first three years of their study in a project that simulates working in the commercial environment. Students will solve technical challenges requiring intellectual and research skills alongside the people challenges of working in inter-disciplinary teams using their organisational and inter-personal skills. The course is designed around problem based learning activities and skills and self directed learning strategies to achieve solutions to a series of multidimensional technical, social and environmental problems. It also includes strategies dealing with teamwork and self reliance in order to achieve an optimum solution.

Course learning outcomes

  • Design solutions to a 'real world' problem to the satisfaction of the client
  • Plan and execute tasks as an efficient and cohesive team thereby providing a truly professional service to a client
  • Compile and communicate a plan for the development of a real site that will appeal to the needs of the community, stakeholders and potential investors
  • Reflect on the requirements needed to operate as part of a multi disciplinary team
  • Reflect on the value of experiential learning to the individual's learning environment
