Course overview
The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge and skills to strategically and successfully manage businesses in the construction environment. Organisational structures and behaviour of construction firms; Strategic management principles (SWOT analysis, goal setting, monitoring etc.); Management principles; Head office function, personnel and resources; Leadership and communication; Business planning/strategy; Business relationships; Marketing principles; Fundamental financial accounting principles (profit and loss statements, balance sheets, debt management etc.); project management body of knowledge applied to business management; Business Ethics.
Course learning outcomes
- Develop and demonstrate key skills and attributes necessary for management of construction businesses including leadership, communication and professional business ethics.
- Compare and contrast differing organisational structures for construction firms (including inter-state and international companies) and understand how this affects leadership and communication within construction businesses.
- Generate and evaluate key financial accounting data in order to make strategic business decisions.
- Design and evaluate key business strategies for the successful operation of construction businesses including management, marketing, personnel and resources strategies.
