Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide students with advanced technical knowledge and skills of modern quantity surveying practices and cost management services on complex construction projects. Pre-contract and Post-contract procedures and administration. International cost planning techniques and value engineering. Whole of life costing techniques for sustainable development. Guaranteed maximum price contracting, relationship contracting and Private Finance Initiatives. Tax Depreciation. Information technology application for quantity surveying practice. Future role of quantity surveyors. Professional ethics and fees. Professional practice and marketing.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically review the duties of a professional quantity surveyor in pre and post contract procedures and cost management services for complex projects.
  • Synthesize knowledge in the preparation of international cost planning and processes in the value management services for complex projects.
  • Apply the whole of life costing techniques for the choice of materials and building systems for sustainable developments.
  • Evaluate the principles of relational contracting and private finance initiatives for infrastructure developments.
  • Reflect intellectual interest and professional ethics as a quantity surveying professional in a lifelong learning environment.
