Course overview
In this course, students will demonstrate an understanding of fire in buildings, fire engineering principles, and the application of fire safety systems using deemed to satisfy and performance solutions in accordance with the National Construction Code. This includes the following: A study of fire chemistry and fire and smoke behaviour, and fire safety engineering principles including active and passive fire safety systems using fire scenarios and fire events. Analysis of occupants and their movement, egress provisions and fire brigade activities and intervention, and the application of software modelling. Investigate material behaviour and fire testing. Analysis and application of principles of design and evaluation, and methodologies used in performance design, including assessment methods and the fire engineering process outlined in the International Fire Engineering Guidelines. An examination of the implications of performance design on decision making, risk management and maintenance of safety for the life of the building.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of fire chemistry and fire and smoke behaviour, and active and passive fire safety systems.
