This includes the following: A study of fire chemistry and fire and smoke behaviour, and fire safety engineering principles including active and passive fire safety systems using fire scenarios and fire events. Analysis of occupants and their movement, egress provisions and fire brigade activities and intervention, and the application of software modelling. Investigate material behaviour and fire testing. Analysis and application of principles of design and evaluation, and methodologies used in performance design, including assessment methods and the fire engineering process outlined in the International Fire Engineering Guidelines. An examination of the implications of performance design on decision making, risk management and maintenance of safety for the life of the building.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of fire chemistry and fire and smoke behaviour, and active and passive fire safety systems.
  • Evaluate the design and construction of buildings in terms of fire safety, the behaviour of materials and the application of fire safety systems in buildings.
  • Apply legislative frameworks to the design, construction and maintenance of buildings.
  • Apply fire engineering principles and methodologies to performance based designs in buildings.
