Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide students with the knowledge in respect to high-rise construction methodology and processes. History of high-rise construction; construction technology and materials; tall building design; footing and structural systems; material handling; people movement; services; sustainability; wind and seismic design, external cladding and interior fit-out.

Course learning outcomes

  • Have an in-depth understanding of the history and evolution of high-rise buildings.
  • Critically review multi-story construction methods and materials used for the construction of high-rise buildings.
  • Gain an understanding of building dead and live loads, as well as seismic and wind loads on tall buildings.
  • Evaluate the logistics involved in the construction of a building such as materials handling, and people movement and the methods of demolishing a high-rise building.
  • Explore the use of smart building technology and sustainability of high-rise buildings.
