Course overview

Students will develop an understanding of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC), electrical, plumbing, mechanical and fire service systems of buildings.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the operational dynamics of building services, encompassing water, power, and drainage systems, and analyse the factors influencing their integration with public infrastructure
  • Analyse and optimise, using digital tools, building performance, (e.g., indoor lighting, acoustics, thermal comfort, and air quality), for occupants’ satisfaction and operational efficiency
  • Analyse the interactions between various building services
  • Explore the implications of building services on construction planning and project management, considering diverse project types and delivery methods
  • Identify key cost drivers in building service delivery and assess their impact on Total Building Performance, integrating cost-effective solutions
  • Demonstrate the interplay between building services management, building performance, and cost implications of services, and formulate strategies to achieve optimal building performance
