Course overview
This course will develop the students' knowledge of construction cost planning including economic building design evaluation and cost modelling techniques, including: Cost management of construction projects; Cost analysis and cost information; Cost planning process, stages and comparative cost studies; Cost planning techniques including functional units, functional areas and elemental cost planning; Project costs, allowances and special provisions; Building morphology and design economics; Computerised methods for cost management.
Course learning outcomes
- evaluate different methods of preparing construction budgets
- apply cost planning techniques and control measures throughout the building process
- evaluate the cost efficiency of designs
- use appropriate computer software for cost planning exercises
- describe the basic principles of life cycle costing
