Course overview

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the practice of quantity surveying, standard methods of measurement, and measurement of domestic and small commercial buildings. Introduction to the principles and practice of Quantity Surveying; Introduction to bill of quantities; Principles of measurement for building works; Use of Mensuration in Quantities; Measurement and Billing Process for Earthworks, Concrete and Reinforcement in Strip Footings, Brickwork, Structural Steelwork, Internal Finishes, Joinery and Roof Coverings .

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the role and duties of Quantity Surveyors in relation to pre and post contract procedures
  • Explain the functions of the bills of quantities in procurement of building projects
  • Measure and take off building quantities for simple domestic construction according to standard measurement rules
