Course overview

This course aims to equip students with the ability to build and maintain a Social Licence to Operate, focussing on natural resource management and energy developments. With emphasis on sustainability and equitable development, students will learn the role of and how to undertake stakeholder consultation and incorporate this into organisational decision making.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the concept of a Social Licence to Operate (SLO) and its significance for the natural resources and energy sectors.
  • Identify and analyse networks of stakeholders including communities with differing values, perspectives, and modes of engagement.
  • Assess and develop communication strategies using interpersonal, traditional and digital media.
  • Evaluate strategies for stakeholder engagement including public participation and grievance mechanisms.
  • Integrate engagement considerations into organisational planning to enhance social performance and resilience.
