Course overview

This course is an introduction to laboratory practice in the biological sciences and will provide a strong grounding in fundamental aspects of the molecular basis of biology. It will involve hands-on practicals covering key techniques in molecular biology and recombinant DNA technology that are relevant for research and diagnostics, and include aspects of experimental design, data generation, data analysis and scientific communication.

  • DNA
  • Proteins
  • Experimental Design

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate competence in fundamental laboratory skills including use of autopipettes, preparing/calculating dilutions, isolation/enumeration of microorganisms
  • Describe how essential molecular biology techniques are applied to research/diagnostics
  • Design simple experiments with appropriate explanation of controls and experimental samples
  • Demonstrate appropriate laboratory practice e.g. use/purpose of PPE
  • Correctly interpret and present/discuss data, including basic statistical analysis
