Course overview

This course will develop skills in the conduct of scientific research through participation in a research project commensurate with education and experience appropriate to employment in research positions or as a basis for further study towards higher research degrees. Students will receive instruction on topics to support their training in research (including but not limited to qualitative vs quantitative studies, ethics in research, health and safety, biostatistics, publishing, referencing, presentation skills, spreadsheets and databases, preparation of a thesis) and perform supervised research appropriate to the discipline in which they conduct their project.

  • Critically review and evaluate existing literature
  • Formulate a research hypothesis and expand into specific research aims
  • Relate the existing literature, intended methodology, and research plans with the hypothesis
  • Determine appropriate data collections and analytical techniques
  • Develop and utilise problem-solving skills to identify then resolve potential limitations and restrictions
  • Present the research clearly and coherently in verbal and written expression
  • Execute the research plan with some level of independence
