Course overview

This course undertakes a holistic examination of the set of financial decisions and constraints that learners face—personal spending, saving, income taxation, insurance cover, credit and debt, and investments—across stages in their (financial) life cycles. By focusing on personal financial planning as an evolving process and providing appropriate financial tools and techniques—time value of money, personal financial statements, comprehensive analysis of interest rates, returns and risk—it aims to improve their personal budgeting, tax management, insurance, consumer debt, and investment decision making.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the application of time value of money concepts and methods to personal financial management decisions

  • Explain fundamental concepts related to risk and return and their relevance to personal investment planning, taxation, and financial management decisions
