Course overview
This course aims to provide essential training in research skills, both as a foundation for further research work and as an important skill for use in professional practice. By the completion of this course, students will complete a Research Proposal that establishes a title for their Research Project, a proposed synopsis of the work they plan to undertake, a literature review through which research questions and an understanding of the research issues/problems are developed, scoping of the research task to be undertaken, and a selection of a research method (or methodologies) to investigate the research question/s.
Course learning outcomes
- Identify a research topic, research aim, key research questions and a Research Proposal that will guide the Research Project in Planning
- Develop a thorough understanding of the literature for a research aim and be able to develop research theme/s, research question/s and/or conceptualisation/s where applicable
- Understand various research methodologies and their application and justify an appropriate methodology (or methodologies) to solve particular planning issues/problems in the form of a Research Proposal
- Understand the requirement for ethical research in terms of its meaning for various types of planning research projects
- Produce and communicate a Research Proposal (in writing and orally), that will provide effective justification and guidelines for a Planning Research Project
