Course overview
This course examines the social, ethical, and cultural values relevant to architectural practice. Students will develop knowledge of practice and project management. They will develop an understanding of the character and operation of practices; legal and regulatory requirements; relevant industry bodies; registration; risks and professional liability; and career planning. Students will develop knowledge of planning regulations and approval processes, different project stages and the management of time, cost, and quality. They acquire knowledge of tendering processes; standard agreements between architects, clients, and consultants; their administration and alternative procurement methods. Students will use appropriate verbal, written, and visual means to apply the above in response to the National Standard of Competency for Architects.
Course learning outcomes
- Develop knowledge of ethics and the regulatory framework related to professional architectural practice
- Develop knowledge of forms of agreements between parties involved in project design and delivery
- Develop knowledge of the development process, including planning legislation and the architect's role in providing planning advice to clients
- Develop knowledge of the role of the architect as related to Expressions of Interest, cost implications for building projects and alternative models of project procurement
- Demonstrate understanding of the administration of standard forms of building contracts, from tendering to project completion
- Develop and apply recognised professional skills and knowledge specific to the National Standard of Competency for Architects
