Course overview
This course will produce an urban planning, social planning, environmental planning or urban design research dissertation. Preparatory work for individual research and critical analysis in consultation with the appointed supervisor to student. Critique of relevant literature. Advanced research approaches, methodology and design. Critical research tools and methods. Ethics. Data collection and analysis. Research conclusions, recommendations and/or proposals for areas of further research. Note: If a student is undertaking either the 'social and community planning' or 'environmental planning' major, then the thesis topic must be of relevance to the major and approved by the Program Director.
Course learning outcomes
- Develop a manageable research task to address a planning research topic at an Honours level.
- Implement an advanced research methodology and/or design approach appropriate to an Honours level
- Demonstrate a critical ability to assemble, analyse and synthesize relevant data and information concerning a planning problem or planning issue into a convincing argument at an advanced level.
- Present a research dissertation that may include policy recommendations/research conclusions or recommendations for further research.
