Course overview

The topic aims to provide urban planning students with a critical understanding of the concepts and practices associated with social planning and their relationship to urban planning practice.

The course will develop practical skills appropriate to the identification and provision of social structures and services. It is essentially a `how to' of social planning. Commencing with a critical examination of what is social planning, socio-demographic profiling and notions of service demand and provision, community participation and consultation, and communication, culminating in students developing a Social Plan.

  • Conduct and complete a community plan
  • Conduct community consultations and public participation exercises
  • Identify appropriate planning and community development techniques for different minority disadvantaged groups in the community
  • Measure the level of need for community and human services
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current arrangements for funding of social and human services
