Course overview
Industrial Design Studio 5B (Service) equips students with advanced skills in human-centered design and systems thinking to create innovative service solutions. The course covers conceptualisation, prototyping, and implementation of services that enhance user experiences and address real-world challenges across diverse industries. Students will gain practical skills and knowledge to develop impactful service designs, preparing them for professional practice in various contexts. This course fosters an understanding of the cultural and societal impact of industrial design, promoting ethical and responsible design practices while enhancing communication skills for diverse audiences.
Course learning outcomes
- Evaluate service design principles and systems thinking concepts by analysing successful studies and exemplars and applying the derived principles to develop innovative service solutions in various contexts, assessed through written reports, presentations, and case study analyses demonstrating critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Apply user-centred design methodologies and user experience (UX) principles by conducting user research and designing service journeys that enhance user experiences across diverse industries, assessed through project-based assignments, practical work, and oral presentations that showcase research methodologies and design processes
- Develop practical skills in service design methodologies, including rapid prototyping and implementation by integrating industrial design practices and tools to produce effective service design outcomes, assessed through hands-on prototyping projects, practical demonstrations, and the use of relevant design tools
- Create and present comprehensive service design projects that demonstrate advanced systems thinking, ethical and responsible design practices, and professional communication skills through compelling narratives and visuals, assessed through project-based work, team/group projects, and oral presentations that highlight the complete design process and ethical considerations
