Course overview
This capstone course extends and consolidates students' research application, integrating diverse skills and methodologies to create design solutions for complex production contexts. Through comprehensive projects, students will synthesize advanced industrial design principles, critical thinking, and practical application. They will develop innovative, socially responsible, and environmentally sustainable solutions, showcasing their technical and creative skills. The course prepares students for leadership roles in diverse professional contexts, emphasising ethical and professional practice while demonstrating the skills and knowledge learned in the Bachelor of Industrial Design program.
Course learning outcomes
- Evaluate product ecosystems in complex production contexts by synthesising competitor analysis and research insights to create innovative design solutions, assessed through comprehensive project reports and presentations
- Integrate advanced industrial design principles and user-centred research to solve complex design problems and create innovative solutions, assessed through project submissions
- Develop environmentally sustainable design solutions by analysing their life cycle impacts and demonstrating an understanding of manufacturing constraints and opportunities through concept screening and scoring, assessed via design prototypes and evaluation reports
- Examine the social and ethical implications of design decisions and incorporate ethical considerations into practice by integrating leadership skills into design project management, assessed through project management plans
- Create high-fidelity prototypes using advanced prototyping tools and technologies by demonstrating enhanced communication skills through compelling and coherent presentation of design ideas, assessed through prototype demonstrations
- Synthesise all learned skills in the capstone project by presenting a production-ready design and defending the decisions made, demonstrating comprehensive integration of technical, creative, and professional skills, assessed through final project presentations
