Course overview
Industrial Design Studio 5A (Systems) introduces students to systems thinking, focusing on its application in solving complex societal, cultural, and environmental challenges. The course explores systems design methodologies and human-centred design principles for innovative problem-solving. Students will develop skills in critical thinking, systems analysis, and interdisciplinary collaboration, enhancing their ability to address intricate design issues. This course fosters a deep understanding of industrial design's impact, promotes responsible and ethical practice, and equips students with advanced problem-solving and communication skills.
Course learning outcomes
- Evaluate systems thinking concepts by analysing case studies of complex systems in various industries, demonstrating a thorough understanding of their relevance to industrial design, with assessments based on critical analysis and synthesis
- Apply systems design methodologies and human-centred design principles to real-world scenarios, aligning system designs with user needs and experiences, developing creative solutions, evaluated through practical design projects and presentations
- Develop strategies for addressing complex societal, cultural, and environmental challenges through the analysis of complex systems, identification of intervention points and feedback loops, and engagement in creative problem-solving and interdisciplinary collaboration, assessed via group projects and strategic proposal submissions
- Create prototypes for systems design proposals and enhance communication skills, culminating in project presentations that include compelling narratives and visuals, while promoting responsible and ethical design practices, measured through the quality and effectiveness of prototypes and the clarity of presentations
