Course overview

To introduce students to urban design and principles, analytical techniques/approaches, implementation processes, the formulation of design concepts, construction of design arguments and the communication of design ideas.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of urban design principles to evaluate and provide advice on the field of Urban Design
  • Perform mapmaking and graphic communication of planning concepts
  • Using cognitive skills identify the social, economic and ecological issues that together form the basis for urban design intervention, and apply them to practice in the development of proposals for existing built environments as well as for new development
  • Employ cognitive technical and professional knowledge to undertake a range of analytical and design approaches to develop design and management responses to urban case studies
  • Demonstrate communication skills to make a clear and coherent presentation of knowledge
