Course overview
To develop students' analytical skills in understanding structural behaviour, distinguishing between different types of loads and describing different types of structural members. To introduce students to the analysis and design of simple building structures according to relevant codes and regulations to start collaborating with engineers and other professionals, utilising their analytical skills to address challenges in the construction industry at a foundational level.
- Maths Revision, Statics and Truss Analysis
- Structural Design
Course learning outcomes
- Analyse, predict and think critically about the behaviour of elements in simple structures subjected to permanent, imposed, and other actions through building a small-scale structural model.
- Select and apply mathematical procedures to analyse simple structures, including evaluating the loading based on relevant Australian Standards, calculating the support reactions, shear forces, normal forces, bending moments and deflections.
- Prepare structural design for key structural members in a small-scale building using design capacity tables and determine costs.
- Communicate structural concepts through mathematics, drawings, photographs, presentations and software.
