Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide students with a fundamental understanding of the fate and behaviour of contaminants in soil, and their effects on and risks to biological systems.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify potentially toxic contaminants and their sources in the environment
  • Describe environmental properties and behaviours of potentially toxic chemicals.
  • Describe transport and transformation processes of chemicals in soil.
  • Evaluate the ecological effects of toxicants on terrestrial ecosystems.
  • Assess ecotoxicological risk and potential limitations in risk assessment practices.
  • Understand environmental protection regulations and potential remediation technologies.
