Course overview

This course will enable students to comprehend the expansive spectrum of safety processes/procedures and how they are applied within the aviation industry. Defining safety; Differentiating between safety 1 and safety 2 approaches; Introducing the risk management concept and ICAO's Safety Management System (SMS) that is comprised of four components (i.e., Safety policy and documentation, Safety risk management, Safety assurance and Safety promotion). Developing a basic App to collect safety data. Emphasis is made on various safety data collection methods and accident analysis models used in the Aviation industry and the appropriate use of collected and analysed data in various sectors within Aviation.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the need for safety management in the aviation industry as one that is high-risk and high-consequence
  • Describe multiple techniques to identify hazards and risks, and be familiar with their benefits and drawbacks
  • Develop a particular safety management tool given a set of conditions to be able to make an informed safety decision
