Course overview
The aim of the course is for students to gain practical experience assisting taxpayers to comply with their tax obligations. The professional practice tax environment and advanced income tax and goods and services tax topics including tax administration, employment deductions, business deductions, rental deductions, personal services income tax offsets, residency of individuals, carrying on business including non- commercial losses, the Goods and Services Tax and the Business Activity Statement, and business structures.
Course learning outcomes
- Explain and apply Australia's income tax and goods and services tax legislation, associated case law and its administration including Australian Tax Office rulings where appropriate to develop professional skills relevant for success in the tax profession.
- Discuss the importance of tax compliance and professional conduct and demonstrate an appropriate ethical and professional attitude.
- Reflect upon and evaluate self-learning and performance in a practical tax setting.
- Identify and articulate the dynamics of various relationships that can arise in a practice setting.
- Evaluate the role of tax advisors in helping taxpayers to comply with their income tax obligations.
- Liaise with the Australia Taxation Office in helping taxpayers fulfill their income tax obligations.
