Academic progress

Adelaide University students gathering

Adelaide University regularly reviews academic progress to identify students at risk of not progressing in their program, and to guide them towards strategies for success.

This page explains how your academic progress is monitored, what happens if your progress is at risk, and the steps you can take to stay on track. You can view the full Academic Progress Procedure.

How academic progress is reviewed

At the end of each review period, your results are assessed to determine whether you are making satisfactory academic progress. You may be identified for formal review if you:

  • fail 50% or more of your enrolled courses in a review period, where you were enrolled in more than one course
  • fail a course you have previously failed
  • fail a course that is required to progress, such as an annual examination or practice-based learning activity.

Students in yearly programs are assessed based on their annual examination or practice-based learning outcomes.

Academic progress statuses

Your academic progress status may change depending on your results. These statuses help us identify when support is needed and what actions may be required.

You are meeting the academic requirements of your program.

Issued the first time you do not meet academic progress requirements. You will receive an email with support options and receive a phone call where possible.

Issued if you have previously received Risk Notice 1 and are identified as not making satisfactory academic progress for a second time at any point in your program. You will be provided with relevant intervention strategies and encouraged to submit an academic support plan.

Issued if you have received Risk Notice 2 and continue not making satisfactory academic progress, or if you are in a yearly program and have already received Risk Notice 1. You will receive an Intention to Preclude Notice and may be precluded from your program unless you successfully demonstrate why you should remain enrolled.

If you are permitted to remain enrolled after an Unsatisfactory status, you will be placed on Conditional status. You must meet specific conditions to continue in your program.

If you hold an international student visa, unsatisfactory progress may affect your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and visa status. You will be contacted directly with further information.

What happens if you are at risk

We will contact you by email and follow up by phone where possible to offer support and guidance. You may be invited to:

  • meet with your Program Director
  • follow a recommended study plan
  • reduce your course load
  • take a leave of absence
  • transfer to another program
  • access academic or personal support services.

All intervention strategies are documented and retained.

Responding to an Intention to Preclude Notice

If you receive an Intention to Preclude Notice, you can submit an Application to Remain Enrolled within 10 working days. Your application should include:

  • reasons for your unsatisfactory academic progress, including any supporting documentation
  • actions taken in response to previous risk notices, including any evidence of following intervention strategies
  • the actions you intend to take to ensure you make satisfactory academic progress.

Applications are provided to a member of the Academic Progress Committee for initial assessment.

  • If continued enrolment is supported, you will be notified by email along with any enrolment conditions or recommendations.
  • If continued enrolment is not supported, you will be invited to attend an Academic Progress Committee meeting.

Outcomes and next steps after your meeting

You will be notified of the committee’s decision by email within five working days. Possible outcomes include:

  • remain enrolled with conditions
  • enrol in a specific course
  • withdraw from a specific course
  • reduce your study load
  • enlist additional support strategies
  • undertake leave of absence
  • preclusion.

If you are precluded, applications for admission to the same or cognate program at the same level or higher level will not be considered for a period of 12 months from the date of the preclusion notice.

Remaining enrolled

If you are permitted to remain enrolled under specific conditions, you will receive an email outlining what those conditions are. Your progress will be monitored, and if you do not meet the conditions or continue to make satisfactory academic progress, your status may change to Unsatisfactory and you could be precluded from your program.

However, if you are facing extenuating circumstances beyond your control, you may be able to remain enrolled. These circumstances can include:

  • serious illness or injury
  • the death or life-threatening illness of an immediate family member or someone in your household
  • a traumatic experience or accident
  • significant disruption to your home or living arrangements.

If you make satisfactory progress in your next review period, your status may be updated to Risk Notice 2 (or Risk Notice 1 for yearly programs).
