Information and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

The First Nations Student Support Services at Adelaide University provides information and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, complementing the University’s wide range of student services. Culturally safe and dedicated support services are available, as well as scholarships, study help, peer mentoring and more. Adelaide University celebrates diversity and student voices. First Nations Student Support Officers

First Nations Student Support Officers work alongside Colleges and broader university services to enhance the student experience at Adelaide University. They provide tailored support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and apply a cultural and holistic approach throughout your university journey. The support team also collaborate to produce Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student resources and events that build a strong connection and sense of belonging within Adelaide University.

After enrolment, you’ll be assigned to a First Nations Student Support Officer, who can support you through your studies. First Nations Student Support Officers work across all Adelaide University campuses and operate Wirringka Study Centres at the Adelaide City, Magill, Mawson Lakes and Mount Gambier and Whyalla campuses. 

Accommodation assistance for First Nations students

We understand that the transition into university life can be daunting for many First Nations students, and your choice of accommodation is an important part of your academic success. We encourage you to work with the Accommodation Service to learn more about the accommodation options available, including those at the campus where you will study.

Our specialist accommodation officers can help you find accommodation that meets your specific needs and budget. Visit the Accommodation webpage for more information or assistance to secure any of the following options:

  • University-managed student accommodation
  • Preferred partner providers
  • Residential colleges
  • Share or private rental accommodation
  • Dedicated housing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

The Accommodation Service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist with your queries. 

First Nations Tutorial Program

The First Nations Tutorial Program connects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with academic tutors with expertise in your field of study. This free program can supplement other university support services, and will enhance and develop your professional and academic strengths. 

Our tutors can assist with coursework, referencing, exam revision, and broader study and research skills. We offer free access to tutors in metropolitan and regional locations. Tutors have skills and experience in a wide range of study areas and can assist with building academic habits, navigating study and workload demands, and providing you with encouragement and support. 

Wirringka Study Centres

Adelaide University offers study centres for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at Adelaide City (East and West), Magill, Mawson Lakes, Mount Gambier and Whyalla campuses.

Equipped with all your study needs, these spaces are set up to provide a culturally safe and calm environment to aid your learning process, providing access to computers and free printing within all the centres. Dedicated kitchen facilities are available, and are stocked with a variety of free meals and snacks to help you power through your studies. Enjoy a culturally safe space where you can focus on your studies, or relax and enjoy a meal in the company of other students.

Swipe card access is required for the Wirringka Study Centres and kitchens.

Counselling support for First Nations students

You can access free, confidential and culturally appropriate counselling via Adelaide University’s counselling service. Our trained counsellors can offer support for all issues that may affect your studies and life. Financial support and scholarships

We know the financial demands that can come with undertaking university study. The First Nations Student Support team can help you to access information on financial support, including scholarships, government payments, bequests or trusts, and paid cadetships. 

Adelaide University offers many scholarships, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students strongly encouraged to apply. We can support you to apply for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-specific scholarships and grants. Visit the Scholarships webpage for more information. 

Study costs can vary depending on the program of study chosen. All Adelaide University degrees are ABSTUDY-approved.
