Tax File Number (TFN)

Adelaide University Campus Building

Providing your tax file number (TFN)

To access any of the Australian Government Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) loans (HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, SA-HELP or OS-HELP), you must provide Adelaide University with your valid tax file number (TFN) by the Census Date of your first enrolment.

Make sure your details match

Your TFN and personal details (full name, date of birth, and address) must exactly match those held by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). If they don’t, you won’t be able to access HELP loans.

You can check your TFN and personal details via your myGov account or by calling the ATO on 13 28 61.

Applying for a TFN

To apply for a TFN, visit the Australian Taxation Office website to review your options. You can apply for a TFN online or by paper, depending on your circumstances and residency status. It is free to apply.

Note: Apply early to ensure you receive your TFN before the Census Date. Most applications are processed within 28 days.

If your TFN hasn’t arrived

If you’ve applied for a tax file number (TFN) but haven’t received it within 10 days of the Census Date, you must provide the Student Assist team with proof of your application. You can do this by presenting:

  • a Certificate of Application for a TFN from the ATO.

Once your TFN is issued, you have 21 days to provide it to the University.
